Perspective on the Impact of Racism on Mental Health: Insights from The CACD TARAH Community Forum.
The CACD TARAH Initiative’s first Community Forum marked a powerful beginning. It is the first in a series of events designed to address systemic racism and hate. Among the impactful panel discussions, Dr. Saka highlighted how systemic racism profoundly shapes health disparities, influencing both individual well-being and community health outcomes. She explained that racism is not merely an interpersonal issue. It is structural and embedded in policies, practices, and systems. These elements perpetuate inequities. These structural factors manifest in social determinants of health, such as access to quality healthcare, education, housing, and employment opportunities.
She also highlighted the impact of stress caused by racism on mental health. She emphasized the need to address racism as a form of trauma. It doesn’t just influence access to resources; racism directly affects physical and mental health outcomes. It reduces life expectancy and diminishes overall quality of life. This is why there is a need to address racism and discrimination from a trauma-informed lens.
She also emphasized that addressing these disparities requires a holistic approach. It involves policy reform, service and program review, and community-level engagement. These efforts are needed to dismantle systemic barriers. By incorporating an equity-informed lens into healthcare systems, it is possible to create environments where marginalized groups receive equitable treatment. This support ensures equity.
