Equity is a commitment to fairness, dignity, and justice. It reflects how people access health services and experience health and well-being. At its core, equity is the ongoing work. It ensures that every person has a fair opportunity to reach their full health potential. This is true regardless of race, gender, income, ability, language, identity, or lived experience.
Equity recognizes that people do not start from the same place.
Historical and systemic inequities create barriers. These include racism, discrimination, and unequal access to resources. These barriers affect how individuals and communities perceive and experience health. Promoting equity means identifying and removing those barriers. It also involves designing systems that intentionally support those who have been marginalized or undeserved.
Health equity, as defined by the World Health Organization (2023), requires addressing avoidable inequalities. It involves eliminating discrimination and ensuring everyone can achieve their highest level of health. This definition reminds us that equity is not a one-time initiative; it is a continuous process. It is a continuous, collaborative effort that asks us to think, adapt, and stay accountable to the people we serve.
At D.A.S Innovative Hub, we bring this understanding of equity into every aspect of our work.
We do so through:
A guiding principle embedded in all our projects is that equity is everyone’s responsibility.
Meaningful change occurs when we incorporate diverse experiences and values and engage with communities in decision-making.
We invite you to think about these questions: What does equity mean to you?
How do you see it showing up in your work, community, or daily life?
